Vanderberg Youth Center
At the Vanderberg Youth Center (VYC), staff and High-Impact volunteers build nurturing and empowering relationships throughout the year with students who are living in our Family Center and New Life Center as well as the surrounding community. All of our programs are free of charge and designed to help students, age 7-18, achieve spiritual, educational, emotional, and social growth.
Services available to only the students staying in our shelters:
1. Chapel Services : On Tuesday and Thursday evenings students are invited to the youth center for chapel services which consist of a Bible study, snack, and time to play and relax in our game room or gym. This time allows students to temporarily escape the stress of homelessness, hear the good news of Jesus Christ, and just act like a kid.
2. School’s Out! Schedule: During Kansas City Public School holidays and snow days, the VYC offers a special morning program for students from the Family Center and NLC so their parents can continue to participate in classes offered by the family center staff. While in the VYC students participate in various activities including bible study, crafts, recreation, and field trips.
City Corps is an after school program running Monday through Thursday for students from 2nd to 12th grade focusing on helping students educationally and spiritually. The VYC partners with four schools in the neighborhood to recruit students for participation. We have three age groups: elementary, middle, and high school. Group sizes range from 8-14 students to ensure students get individualized attention and encouragement. Students are expected to attend City Corps for the entire school year. Focusing on the same students year-round allows staff to walk alongside students through their daily struggles. Through the City Corps program, we provide: homework help, academic enrichment, Bible study, Scripture memory, social development, practical life skills, recreation, and field trips.
Based in our VYC, City Camp is a 9 week day camp that serves youth in Kansas City’s urban core. It is geared toward sharing the gospel with students, age 7-18, through hands-on learning which encourages spiritual, educational, emotional, and social growth. Youth living in the Family Center or New Life Center attend in the mornings, while youth from the surrounding community attend in the afternoons. Family Center guests change frequently so it is important to utilize every opportunity to share the gospel and minister to these students’ unique situations. Community students attend consistently all summer which allows staff and interns to develop deep relationships through discipleship and mentoring. Students are led in devotions, educational activities, team building exercise, and recreation. They also receive swim lessons through a partnership with an area YMCA, meals and snacks, and field trips to fun and educational venues.
Camp CUMCITO (City Union Mission Camp in the Ozarks)
Each summer more than 650 children from impoverished and homeless families throughout the Kansas City metro area enjoy bright sunny days filled with love, laughter and the opportunity to make new friends at our residential summer camp located in Warsaw, Mo. They sleep in clean, safe beds and are provided three nutritious daily meals and wholesome snacks. In chapel, at campfires and during quiet times with caring Christian volunteers, they learn about Jesus Christ and how he can help them build bright futures. Boys and girls ages 7 through 16 attend Big Camp, where they take part in swimming, fishing, hiking, arts and crafts, and other exciting adventures. In our Tot Lot, youngsters 4 through 6 are provided with appropriate summer-camping clothing and swimsuits and enjoy story times, tea parties and pony rides. Weekly sessions are held throughout the summer months for young campers as well as families.
