Randy Birch has been a blessing to the Mission for the last 4-1/2 years. After graduating from our Christian Life Program, Randy was able to join our maintenance staff working to keep our Men's Campus buildings operational. He comes in after-hours and on weekends when necessary, always with a good attitude.
Mary had been a guest at the Family Shelter at City Union Mission for five months, and regularly attended the Celebrate Recovery sessions taught by Star Meikel on Friday mornings. In fact, she never missed a class since it started back in October. But Friday's class was bittersweet as Mary announced that she'd be leaving the Mission. But with delight in her voice and on her face, she proclaimed that she'd be moving into her own apartment soon on Kansas City's north side.

It's a great example of how City Union Mission invests in the lives of our guests while they're here and helps lay the foundation for a better tomorrow. When asked if her time at City Union Mission was a positive experience, without hesitation, Mary said, "The Mission has been great!"

"I am always encouraged by our ministry when I see how the Lord works in the lives of our guests when he is put first. I met Beverly back in January while doing her intake. She recently shared with me, “I came in on a mission and I didn’t stop until mission accomplished!” Beverly will move out Friday into her own apartment! She obtained funding to assist with her deposit and 2 months’ rent. She also has located resources for furniture and dishes. Congratulations to Ms. Beverly! "

The employees at Mortgage Investment Services Corporation in Shawnee continue to provide for our guests needs at the Mission. They spent time on some early spring clearing of closets as well as shopping and collecting highest need items. We are so grateful for their hearts to give to our community.

The youth choir from First Baptist Church of Mustang, Oklahoma treated those staying at our Men's Center & our Women & Family Center to a wonderful concert this week. The choir consisted of up to 75 members singing joyful songs of hope and praise to our guests. Everyone had a great time enjoying these youth's musical talents. Thank you to the choir for bringing joy to our guests through inspiring songs about the love of Jesus!
John was a 17-year-old heroin user and was a gang leader in California. He served 11 years in San Quentin State Prison. After being released from prison, John was introduced to a pastor that had a program for homeless men. John eventually lived in a small trailer on the church property where he would do odd jobs for the church. Part of the program required that he attend church 3 times each week. After some time, John asked Jesus to forgive his sins and to be his Lord and Savior. John and his family are now living here at our Women & Family Center.

John is excited about a great job interview he had this week. He continues to be drug free. He shared that while riding the bus to an appointment recently, he saw someone he had been in prison with and the man offered him drugs. John told the guy that he had given his life to Jesus and does not do drugs anymore. Praise the Lord! We can’t wait to see what God has in store next for his journey!

A guest at our Women & Family Shelter really struggled when she first arrived, calling herself a failure. With a lot of love and gentle nudging, she is finally getting the medical help she has needed and can now focus to better work through her case plan. She is proud of herself and excited to work towards joining our New Life Program for long-term healing.
After an inquiry across the Mission to see who had an interest in and passion for leading worship, the Lord assembled this little crew (Stephen Chichester, Travis Strong, Troy Foster, Philip Garvin and Bob O'Keith,). Represented here is over 100 years of combined worship leading experience. The band is slowly building their repertoire, assembling equipment, and learning (again) how much they love to lead worship. They count it a privilege to be able to incorporate this level of ministry here at City Union Mission. The band recently practiced at our L. Minor Care center and were such a blessing to the guests, who all thought they were awesome!
The staff at the Vanderberg Youth Center(VYC) have been volunteering with ‘Lead to Read KC’ at Faxon Elementary this semester. While there, each of them is assigned a 3rd grade reading buddy mentor. They help the kids with sight words, building confidence in reading aloud, and comprehension of what was read. It's a great way for the VYC staff to support a local teacher and students in our community in order to help promote educational success and aid in the ending of the cycle of poverty and homelessness. We're hopeful that some of the connections they build will lead to students coming to City Camp this summer and learning about Jesus!
While parents participate in chapel at our Women & Family Center, our Vanderberg Youth Center (VYC) staff run their own chapel services geared towards the youth that we serve. Last night, we had one of our students who has been exploring faith come to the realization that she wanted a personal relationship with Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Staff walked her through a prayer and then guided her through some practical next steps as she ventures into this new relationship. Please pray for this student and the VYC staff as they pour love into the lives of these young people they serve day in and day out. Thank you!
