When Ben first came to City Union Mission, he was carrying the weight of loss, disappointment, and discouragement. He needed more than a temporary place to stay. He needed the kind of structured, compassionate support that could help him stabilize, reconnect with others, and begin planning for his future.

Reaching a Turning Point

Ben had once owned a trucking company in Kansas with four trucks on the road. After a difficult season marked by alcoholism and painful business decisions, he lost the company he had worked to build.

His family life had also changed. His wife had suffered a stroke years earlier and was receiving care, while his children were staying with relatives as Ben tried to determine what came next.

For a long time, Ben believed he could fix everything on his own.

“I was too full of pride,” he said. “I had this idea that I could do it myself.”

But the harder he tried, the more isolated he became. After losing his career, struggling to find work, and feeling as though he had no clear path forward, Ben reached a point where he knew something had to change.

His sister encouraged him to seek help. After hearing about City Union Mission more than once, Ben arrived at the Men’s Center.

Finding Support for Homeless Men in Kansas City

At first, Ben kept to himself.

“I sat in the corner, ignored everyone else, didn’t talk to anyone,” he shared.

City Union Mission’s Men’s Center provides safe shelter, basic necessities, case management, spiritual guidance, and structured programs for men facing homelessness and other significant challenges. It is designed to create room for people to stabilize, establish goals, and begin moving forward.

Staff members and fellow guests did not pressure Ben, but they also did not give up on him. They continued showing up, offering encouragement, and inviting him into community. Through their actions, they reminded him that he was not alone.

“The thing that stuck out to me the most when I came here was the giving nature,” Ben said. “Everyone cared.”

Over time, that consistent care began to make a difference.

Ben started coming out of his shell. He engaged with staff members, built relationships with others in the program, and opened himself to the support around him.

What he found was not simply a place to stay. He found a Christ-centered community where he could stabilize, grow, and take meaningful steps toward a new future.

Learning to Understand His Emotions

One of Ben’s most significant areas of growth has been learning to understand his emotions, triggers, and responses.

For years, he believed he had to push through pain and keep everything inside. Through structured support and trusted relationships at the Mission, he began to recognize how that approach had affected his life.

“I’m realizing that while I was successful, I was never living,” he said.

Healing-centered care gave Ben room to look honestly at his experiences without allowing them to define his future. With encouragement, accountability, and practical guidance, he began developing healthier ways to respond to challenges and connect with the people around him.

Learning to Trust God

Ben’s faith has also grown during his time at City Union Mission.

He points to Proverbs 3:5–6 as a passage that continues to guide him: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

For much of his life, Ben admits that trust did not come easily. He was accustomed to relying on himself. At the Mission, however, he began to recognize God’s work through people, conversations, encouragement, worship, and daily acts of care.

“I get here, and I see God’s hands all over the place,” Ben shared. “The more that I come to trust Him, the more enjoyment I have.”

Trusting God has not meant ignoring the work ahead. Instead, it has given Ben a new foundation from which to face that work—with faith, humility, and hope.

Preparing for a New Career

Today, Ben is looking toward the future.

As a military veteran and former communications specialist, he has always enjoyed working with computers. With encouragement from the Mission team, he is preparing to return to school and pursue his CompTIA A+ certification.

At 51 years old, Ben is beginning a new educational and professional chapter.

“I’m really excited about it,” he said. “I get to live it more than just recreation.”

Through City Union Mission’s vocational development services, program participants can receive support as they explore career options, pursue training, develop workplace skills, and prepare for stable employment.

For Ben, returning to technology represents more than a career change. It is an opportunity to rediscover something he enjoys and use it to build a more stable future.

The Doors That Brought Him Back to Life

Ben’s story is still being written, but it is now marked by hope, faith, growth, and community.

He is rebuilding relationships, preparing for a new career path, and learning that he does not have to walk through life alone.

When asked what City Union Mission means to him, Ben’s answer was simple and powerful:

“City Union Mission will always be important to me because these are the doors that brought me back to life.”

That is what healing-centered, Christ-centered care looks like in practice. It is safe shelter, structured support, spiritual formation, and people who continue showing up with compassion, accountability, and hope.
