A Legacy of Compassion at City Union Mission

In Kansas City, some men don’t have homes and struggle with physical and mental health challenges. City Union Mission has been helping people in need for many years. One of its most important programs is the L. Minor Care Center, named after Lorraine Minor.
Who is Lorraine Minor?
Lorraine Minor worked at City Union Mission for decades, helping the organization grow and improve its programs. She cared deeply about men, women, and families experiencing homelessness and other challenges.
People who knew her describe Lorraine as kind but strong, caring, and passionate about helping people heal. She focused on those often overlooked by traditional systems. Beyond Kansas City, she trained staff at rescue missions across the country, teaching them to provide thoughtful, respectful, and whole-person care. She believes that helping people means more than giving food or shelter; it means supporting their minds, bodies, and spirits.
Why the L. Minor Care Center is Needed
Many men coming to City Union Mission’s shelter face serious high barriers to care and vulnerabilities due to spiritual distress, mental and physical illness, and special or specific needs related to age or military service. About 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness live with severe mental illness.
Regular shelters usually offer short-term stays, but men with complex needs need more:
- A stable place to live
- Complex care and coordinated support
- Daily routines
- A caring community
Lorraine recognized that long-term solutions must address physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs, and provide safe spaces to live and thrive.
What Is the L. Minor Care Center?
Opened in 2018, the L. Minor Care Center is located next to City Union Mission’s men’s shelter. Unlike a typical shelter, the care center provides long-term care with personalized plans for each guest. The team provides and coordinates compassionate support that empowers each person to stabilize, heal, and take meaningful steps toward a Positive Safe Home.
People stay as long as they need to recover, heal, and take meaningful steps forward. Lorraine believed that you can’t rush true healing.
What Makes the Center Different
The L. Minor Care Center focuses on healing-centered engagement and care. Guests work with a team that helps them reach their personal goals while supporting their health and needs.
Another key difference is that there are no time limits. Guests stay until they are ready for positive, safe, and supportive living. This approach allows people to:
- Learn to self-manage and work with community providers
- Learn life skills
- Build confidence, connect or reconnect with family or friends, and build community support.
Real Impact
The results show the difference the center makes:
- 75% of guests remain in safe homes one year after leaving
- Guests and alumni create a positive community within the center and in Kansas City
- Guests have learned a safe routine that grounds symptoms in reality
For many men, the L. Minor Care Center is the first place they feel listened to, respected, and treated with dignity.
Lorraine Minor’s Legacy
The center reflects Lorraine’s values: compassion, whole-person care, healing, and respect for every individual. Her work continues to guide the City Union Mission today.
Looking Ahead
City Union Mission is expanding programs to help men, women, and families experiencing homelessness, as well as those in need of care and support. The L. Minor Care Center sets an example for thoughtful, caring programs and could inspire other communities, too.
