A Life Marked by resilience, courage, and love.
Deanna “Dee Dee” Lynn Ward was born on August 8th, 1948, in Kansas City, Missouri, and on December 26, 2025, an early Friday morning, passed away and finally found a Father’s love that never fails.
Dee Dee’s story lives on through the memories and experiences of those who knew her. She was a survivor, known for her big heart and unwavering spirit. When her parents, Kenneth Ward and Lola Hawley, were unable to care for her, she spent her early years in state mental institutions, foster care, and group homes. In 1971, she left those systems and unfortunately, walked a path of instability that led to homelessness.
Throughout her life, Dee Dee relied on shelters, HUD housing, and community resources. She was known for her courage and authenticity. She became a familiar face in Kansas City’s social service community. She found support at City Union Mission, reStart, Grand Avenue Temple, and many other organizations dedicated to care and restoration.
Dee Dee was seen, known, and loved. Her presence left a lasting impact.
We are grateful for the many individuals and organizations who cared for Dee Dee, offering patience, compassion, and kindness when it mattered most.
Dee Dee’s life reminds us of the strength found in resilience, courage, and love. In her final months at Butler Rehab and Health Center, she was treated with dignity and respect, recognized as a person with a story and value.
Dee Dee is preceded in death by her parents; her partner, Raymond Davis; and her son Shawn, who died in 2007 during combat operations in Baghdad. She is survived by her sons, Kenny and Charlie.
