Daniel's Story

From Rock Bottom to Renewal: Daniel’s Journey of Faith, Healing, and Hope

Daniel

Daniel, who recently graduated from the Christian Life Program, came to City Union Mission in January 2024. After losing his job and connection to loved ones, he spiraled into fear, hopelessness, and mistrust. Compounding his struggles, Daniel had difficulty hearing, which made communication frustrating. He turned to alcohol to cope.

Not knowing where he would end up, Daniel boarded a Greyhound bus and stopped in Kansas City. Through word-of-mouth, he heard about City Union Mission, a trusted Kansas City homeless shelter. Feeling a pull to go there, he walked through the Men’s Center doors that same January. After speaking with staff, Daniel chose the Christian Life Program path, starting with the Equip program and progressing to the Christian Life Center.

Healing Trauma and Finding Support

Through a Biblically oriented trauma recovery process, Daniel worked closely with counselors and a supportive community to confront past trauma. He faced a critical moment that nearly caused him to leave the program. With the guidance, prayers, and compassion of the staff, he chose to stay and continue his recovery.

This healing milestone allowed Daniel to focus on preparing for work, community reintegration, and personal growth. He also successfully quit smoking with support from his counselor.

Restoring Confidence and Independence

Daniel’s hearing challenges were addressed with the help of staff who connected him with resources for hearing aids. He was amazed to hear clearly for the first time in years, reducing stress and improving communication. With a grant, he also received dentures, giving him confidence in his smile and overall self-image.

During the program, Daniel rededicated his life to Jesus Christ, embraced a Christian lifestyle, and overcame alcohol addiction. He was baptized at Summit Point Church, his supportive spiritual community.

Career and Financial Growth

Before joining the program, Daniel’s driver’s license was suspended. With program support, he completed SATOP requirements and regained his license. He received a car through the City Union Mission’s Car Program, enabling him to commute to school, training, work, and church.

The Vocational Team guided Daniel in building his resume, practicing interviews, and identifying his career path. He completed an eight-week welding course at MCC Penn Valley and secured a living-wage job at KC Track, using his new skills to repair rail cars. He has already received two raises.

Daniel also participated in financial literacy seminars hosted by Mainstreet Bank and other institutions. He now has a financial plan in place to manage his budget, build credit, and pay off debt.

Moving into Permanent Housing

In August, Daniel transitioned into permanent housing in downtown Kansas City. He continues to stay in contact with his CLP case manager for guidance and encouragement during this exciting new chapter.

Daniel’s journey demonstrates the transformative impact of a faith-based Kansas City homeless shelter, highlighting how comprehensive programs at City Union Mission provide healing, hope, vocational training, and lasting independence.
