Important Update: City Union Mission Closes Camp CUMCITO to Public
With a heavy heart we have announced the closing of Camp CUMCITO to the public this summer to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Camp CUMCITO summer camping programs will remain open for kids staying at the Mission. Additionally, camp will take place mainly on the Mission campus this summer instead of at their Warsaw location in the Missouri Ozarks.
“We are heartbroken that campers from our community will not be able to take part in camp this summer,” said City Union Mission Chief Executive Officer Terry Megli. “It is only under the most extreme conditions that we would close camp and we feel like the state of our current pandemic warrants the closure for the safety and health of our campers, their families, our staff and volunteers.”
Megli also shares that while they are not able to open camp to children from the community, kids staying at their shelter will be allowed to partake in summer camp programs. “Camp will look a little different for kids in our care this summer and we are grateful for supporters and volunteers that are helping make this summer one filled with fun and excitement in light of the heavy and difficult past few weeks we have experienced.” Children staying at the Mission ages 4 to 17 can experience Camp CUMCITO’s camping programs including Bible studies, arts and crafts and outdoor activities. Camp activities will take place mainly at the Mission with the occasional day visit to their Warsaw campus.
“This will be the first summer in 85 years that our camp has not been filled with youth from the community,” said Megli. “We want our former community campers and their families to know that even though we may be apart this summer, we are still here for them. We plan to reach out to our former campers and encourage them and their families and to help with any needs they might have.”

Camp CUMCITO sits on 600 acres new Warsaw, Missouri and offers a one-week summer Bible camp experience to 630 children and teens, age 4-16. Founded in 1935, priority is given to those who couldn’t pay for camp otherwise. We serve low income children, mainly from urban KC and rural Benton County. Most campers only pay a $5 registration fee. This is made possible by generous volunteers who staff over 400 positions each summer (during peak weeks, 84 week-long positions and 91 one-day positions) and donors who contribute over $381 per camper.
