When Tatyana Hopkins came to City Union Mission, she was searching for support, structure, and a stronger foundation for life as a young mother. Through the Mission’s faith-based support for mothers in Kansas City, she found an opportunity to grow spiritually, develop practical skills, and begin building greater stability for her family.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Tatyana had been connected to the church for many years. She was baptized at 19 and attended Grace Baptist Church, but she was still learning what it meant to live out her faith in everyday life.

After having her son, Tatyana began to sense that God was calling her into something deeper.

Finding Support Through the New Life Program

That opportunity came when someone she trusted told her about City Union Mission’s New Life Program.

Designed for women and families, the long-term program provides biblical studies, life-skills education, individualized case management, counseling, discipleship, and personalized plans for healthier living.

At the time, Tatyana was carrying stress related to finances, parenting, relationships, and the pressure to keep everything together. She often felt as though her money was always going somewhere and that she was living paycheck to paycheck.

She wanted to learn how to budget, steward her resources well, and create greater stability for herself and her son.

From her first days in the New Life Program, Tatyana felt refreshed by the structure and spiritual care surrounding her. One of the most meaningful changes was having dedicated time to read and study God’s Word each day.

“I kept saying, ‘God, I want to read the Bible,’” she shared. “I want to read the Bible and be in the Word, but I just didn’t have that structure or foundation.”

Growing in Practical and Spiritual Ways

Through Scripture-based classes, case management, counseling, and accountability, Tatyana began growing in both practical and spiritual areas of her life.

She has worked to improve her health, develop better financial habits, manage her time, grow as a mother, and understand herself more fully. The honest and encouraging support she receives has helped her examine her emotions through the truth of God’s Word instead of becoming overwhelmed by them.

The New Life Program is part of City Union Mission’s broader effort to provide care and support for women and families in Kansas City. Its purpose extends beyond meeting immediate needs. The program helps participants develop the personal, spiritual, and practical foundations needed to pursue lasting stability.

For Tatyana, that combination of faith and structure has made a meaningful difference.

Learning to Trust God as Her Provider

Tatyana’s faith has grown stronger throughout this season. She said God has shown her that He has been with her all along—opening doors, providing opportunities, and helping her see her life from a new perspective.

“He’s showing me that He’s a provider,” she said. “He’s showing me that He’s everything He said He is.”

Two Bible verses have carried special meaning for her. Philippians 4:13 reminds her that she can do all things through Christ who strengthens her. Romans 3:23 has helped her release the pressure to be perfect and receive God’s grace with honesty and humility.

These truths have helped Tatyana recognize that growth does not require perfection. Instead, it requires faith, humility, accountability, and a willingness to keep moving forward.

Surrounded by Encouragement and Care

The people at City Union Mission have also made a lasting impact on Tatyana. She describes staff members and counselors as steady sources of encouragement, clarity, and care.

During difficult moments, they have helped her see herself more clearly, lift her perspective, and remain focused on the life she is working to build.

When asked what gives her hope now, Tatyana said she is excited to see what God will do next. She is focused on building her savings, caring for her health, growing in accountability, and becoming the mother God has called her to be.

Encouragement for Other Mothers in Kansas City

For someone who may be struggling and unsure where to turn, Tatyana offers this encouragement: turn to God, open your Bible, pray, and take action by reaching out for help.

That is what helped her find the support she needed.

To Tatyana, City Union Mission means family. It is a place where she feels seen, supported, and surrounded by people who want to help her grow.

Her story is a reminder that healing-centered care is not only about meeting someone’s immediate needs. It is also about helping that person build a more stable life through faith, structure, accountability, and hope.

As Tatyana shared, “When God has something planned for you, be obedient. It’s all going to work out with God.”
