When LaDale DeVore arrived at City Union Mission, he was worn out from a long and difficult journey. He had experienced homelessness since 2018 and felt as though nothing he tried was working.

During that uncertain season, LaDale prayed and asked Jesus to guide him. Just a few days later, he came to City Union Mission. Although he was hesitant at first, he soon realized he had found more than temporary shelter. He had found compassionate support, renewed hope, and an opportunity to begin moving forward.

Finding Stability Through Homeless Services in Kansas City

Adjusting to a new environment was not easy. The unfamiliar surroundings and routines initially felt overwhelming, but encouragement from the people around him helped LaDale become more comfortable.

A turning point came when he moved to City Union Mission’s L. Minor Care Center. There, LaDale found the peace and stability he needed to reflect, heal, and begin making lasting changes.

Through Bible study, nutritious meals, hot showers, safe shelter, and caring support, LaDale began to see City Union Mission differently. It was not simply a place to stay. It became a place where he could rest, think clearly, strengthen his faith, and prepare for what came next.

Building a New Beginning on Faith

Faith has become the foundation of LaDale’s renewed hope. As he spends time reading the Bible, especially the Book of Proverbs—his relationship with God continues to grow stronger and more personal.

One verse he carries with him is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

As LaDale prepares to enter City Union Mission’s Christian Life Program, he is looking forward to living in a supportive Christian community, growing spiritually, developing new skills, and working toward stable housing and employment.

The Christian Life Program provides more than immediate assistance. It helps men address the challenges that contributed to homelessness while building the spiritual, personal, and practical foundations needed for lasting change.

A Place Where Hope Lives

Today, LaDale uses one word to describe City Union Mission: hope.

He arrived during one of the most difficult seasons of his life. Now, through prayer, patience, and trust in God, he can see the possibility of a brighter future.

LaDale wants others experiencing homelessness to know that asking for help can be the beginning of something new. In his experience, City Union Mission offers people a hand up—not simply a handout—through Christ-centered care, practical resources, and continued support.

His encouragement to anyone facing a difficult season is simple:

“Trust in God. No matter what. Trust in God.”

LaDale’s story is still being written, but he is moving forward with renewed faith, greater stability, and hope for what lies ahead.
