The Road Back
Sometimes, we reach a point in life when we know things have to change.
For Gareth Keown, CEO of City Union Mission, that moment started The Road Back: 90 Days of Health, Hope, and Renewal. This daily storytelling journey began on June 1.
Over the next 90 days, Gareth will share open reflections from his own health journey and connect his experiences to the daily work at City Union Mission. This campaign goes beyond physical health. It’s about leadership, recovery, resilience, faith, and the hope that starts with one honest step forward.
Why “The Road Back”?
In recent months, Gareth has led City Union Mission through challenges, growth, and renewal. Like many nonprofits, the Mission has faced real pressure. The needs in Kansas City are still great, and serving people in crisis takes strength, wisdom, compassion, and perseverance.
While helping the Mission move toward better health, Gareth realized he needed to focus on his own health too.
This realization became the heart of The Road Back.
This journey is not polished or filtered. It is meant to be real. Each day, Gareth will share a health moment, a reflection, and invite or challenge others who may be on their own road back.
A Personal Journey With a Mission Purpose
At City Union Mission, we support men, women, and families as they move from crisis to stability, healing, and hope. Every day, our guests and clients take brave steps forward with safe shelter, structured programs, Christ-centered care, and a supportive community.
The Road Back shows that same kind of progress.
It reminds us that change usually doesn’t happen all at once. It comes one step at a time, one honest decision at a time, and one day of showing up at a time.
Whether someone is rebuilding after homelessness, recovering from hardship, leading under pressure, or just trying to get healthier in body, mind, or spirit, the road back starts with willingness.
An Invitation to Begin Again
This campaign is also an invitation.
Your road back might be physical. It could be emotional, spiritual, relational, or financial. Maybe you’re carrying pressure that few people notice. Maybe you’re ready to take a small step toward renewal.
No matter where you are, The Road Back reminds us that hope is still possible.
For the next 90 days, you can follow Gareth’s daily videos and reflections, learn more about City Union Mission’s work, and find ways to support the Mission’s impact in Kansas City through prayer, giving, volunteering, or sharing the journey with others.
Follow the Journey
Starting June 1, follow The Road Back and join a story of health, leadership, recovery, and hope.
Sometimes, the road back starts with just one step.
And sometimes, that one step invites others to begin again too.
