About Us

Hope Lives Here

100 Years

We’ve Been Here Since 1924

For nearly 100 years, City Union Mission has provided warm beds, nutritious food and a place of safety for thousands of men, women and children looking to overcome poverty and homelessness.

Founded by Rev. and Mrs. David Bulkley, one of their primary reasons for beginning this evangelical Christian ministry was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the hurting and the lost. Today, the Mission’s staff continues to uphold that commitment to serve as the Lord’s hands and feet to a community in need.

City Union Mission receives no government support and is not a United Way agency. The Mission depends solely on the gifts of God’s people – individuals, churches, groups, foundations and businesses who have a heart for the poor and homeless in Kansas City and want to partner with us in our ministry.

Thank you for learning more about City Union Mission and how you can join us in our ministry!

Since our doors first opened in 1924, we have served our neighbors throughout Kansas City… humbly welcoming them in the name of Christ to offer help, healing and hope.

Every day, we strive to meet the needs of local men, women and children who are struggling with poverty, homelessness and other challenges. In our care, lives are transformed as they experience God’s love and work through programs designed to help them get back on their feet and into the community again.

If you’re already a supporter, I just want to thank you for your heartfelt generosity. You help rebuild lives, restore families and strengthen neighborhoods. Because of you, the people we serve receive the support and encouragement they need to lead more stable, healthy and productive lives.

If you’re new to City Union Mission, then let me say welcome to our community! As you explore our website and read stories of lives transformed, I hope you’ll be inspired to volunteer one day… come in for a tour… or donate a meal to someone in need.

If the Lord leads you to make a financial gift or donate your time as a volunteer, please know that it will make an eternal impact in the lives of those we serve.

Hope lives here… and it’s all thanks to kind friends like you. God bless!

The Lord’s servant,

Dr. Terry Megli
Chief Executive Officer

Our Mission

City Union Mission is an evangelical Christian ministry committed to sharing the gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of men, women and children who are poor or homeless.

Our Core Values

Christ Centered • Biblically Based • Accountability
Compassion • Family • Gratitude • Hope
Humility • Integrity • Love • Prayer • Service

Christ Centered: We will stay true to our heritage and to our God by centering all we do on and around the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only way to eternal life in heaven.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” – Colossians 3:1

Biblically Based: We are committed to use God’s Word, the Bible, in all of our ministries and programs.  We will submit to the Bible as our final authority.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the people of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Accountability: We will place ourselves in the position of being answerable for all our actions towards clients, businesses, staff members and supporters. We will also wisely and responsibly use all that God provides.

“But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” – 2 Corinthians 4:2

Compassion: We will minister to God’s human creation with kindness and with genuine concern.

“But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” – Matthew 9:36

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Colossians 3:12

Family: We believe that the family is a precious creation of God and was designed by Him to be the base unit of society and composed of a husband, wife, and if God allows, children.

“If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” – 1 Timothy 5:8

Gratitude: We will seek to exemplify and instill in others an attitude of thankfulness and appreciation for what God and others have done to bring blessing into our lives.

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” –  Colossians 2:6

Hope: As a staff of Christians who have experienced God’s amazing forgiveness, we know there is great hope for every individual we minister to no matter how “hopeless” they might appear. As a ministry, we extend and restore hope to the broken and hurting.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” –  Romans 15:13

Humility: We will conduct ourselves in such a way that reflects the significant roles that both God and others play in our lives – God, by His gifts to us, and others, by their prayer and help.

“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – 1 Peter 5:5b

Integrity: We will closely follow a clear standard of values — those found in the Bible. This  ministry can be counted on to be sound and undivided in purpose. We will always be truthful in speech, writing and action.

“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” – I Thessalonians 2:13

“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them.” – I Timothy 4:16

Love: We will reach out in concern and care for others in the way God reaches out to us.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Prayer: We will talk to our heavenly Father about everything because He cares for us and longs for His children to communicate with Him.  We will always give Him thanks, acknowledging Him as the giver of all good things.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”  Hebrews 4:16

Service: We will follow the example of Jesus who came not to be served, but to serve others (Mark 10:45) and of Joshua who said that he and his house would serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).  Service is not only a spiritual gift but an imperative for every believer.

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” Romans 12:1

Our Statement of Faith

A. The Holy Scriptures as originally given by God, are divinely inspired, infallible, inerrant, entirely trustworthy and the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

B. There is one God, Creator of all and eternally existent in three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

C. In the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ (God manifest in the flesh), in His virgin birth, His sinless human life, His divine miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His mediatorial work, His present rule as Head of the Church and His personal return in power and glory.

D. Man is born with a fallen nature and is therefore lost and sinful; that by faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (through grace and apart from works) and regeneration of the Holy Spirit any person is saved and becomes a child of God.

E. In the deity and personality of the Holy Spirit; in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a godly life to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

F. In the spiritual unity of all true believers, the Church, the Body of Christ.

G. In the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved will be glorified and reign with Jesus Christ and those who are lost will suffer eternal damnation.
