Jonah came to City Union Mission during a difficult season in his life. He was experiencing homelessness and walking through mental health challenges, and those first days were not easy.

He lost his phone and wallet. He was adjusting to a new place. He missed talking with his mom.

Even in the middle of that uncertainty, Jonah began to recognize that he was somewhere safe. He had a roof over his head, a bed to sleep in, and the beginning of a more stable path forward.

Jonah’s Story at a Glance

Jonah came to City Union Mission during a difficult season marked by homelessness, mental health challenges, and uncertainty. Through safety, Scripture, prayer, supportive relationships, and the hope of Christ, Jonah is taking steps toward stability, faith, education, work, and a new direction.

Jonah Finds Hope in a Hard Season

For Jonah, City Union Mission was more than a Christian homeless shelter in Kansas City. It became a place where he could receive safety, Christ-centered care, encouragement, and support as he began taking steps toward stability.

For more than 102 years, the Mission has served Kansas City neighbors who are poor or homeless with dignity, compassion, and the hope of Christ. Jonah’s story reflects that ongoing work: meeting immediate needs while creating pathways toward stability, recovery, and renewed hope.

Discovering Gospel Hope in a Hard Season

Since arriving at the Mission, Jonah says the biggest change in his life has been discovering the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Reading Scripture, praying, and receiving support from others have helped his faith grow. He has been reading the Old Testament, memorizing verses, and holding on to promises like John 3:16.

For Jonah, God’s Word gives direction, comfort, and hope. He believes God has been guiding him, even when he did not notice it at first.

Supported by Faith, Staff, and Community

Jonah has also found encouragement through relationships.

He is thankful for his father, whose faith has helped bring them closer. He is also grateful for staff members like Anthony Mills, who has taught him more about the Gospel and reminded him to hold on to hope.

Through Christ-centered care, supportive conversations, and steady encouragement, Jonah is beginning to see a future that feels more grounded.

He is excited to begin the Christian Life Program, where he hopes to grow in his faith, meet new people, and continue building a strong foundation.

Taking Steps Toward a New Direction

Today, Jonah has goals he is ready to work toward.

He wants to finish the Christian Life Program, return to school, do well in his classes, learn to drive, find a job, and keep pursuing his dream of becoming a scientist.

These goals reflect more than ambition. They reflect hope, discipline, and the desire to keep moving forward.

Jonah’s Message for Others

For anyone who is struggling and unsure where to turn, Jonah’s message is simple: turn to God.

He believes God has been with him, giving him strength and care. And he wants others to know that God cares for them, too.

There may be hard days. There may be setbacks. But Jonah’s story reminds us that hope can take root in hard places, especially when someone is surrounded by prayer, community, structure, and the love of Christ.
