Addiction Recovery Story: Willie Finds Faith and Purpose

Willie’s addiction recovery story began a new chapter when he came to City Union Mission ready for something different. After years of struggling with alcohol, drugs, and life without Christ, he wanted an opportunity to rebuild his life.

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Willie had been living in Missouri for several years when he arrived at the Mission. His road had been difficult, but he knew something needed to change.

“I came to the Mission to try to get my life back together,” Willie said.

That decision marked the beginning of his journey, but rebuilding was not easy at first.

The Beginning of Willie’s Addiction Recovery Story

When Willie first came to City Union Mission, even staying in one place was difficult. He had to learn how to slow down, focus, trust people, and begin facing the challenges that had kept him from stability.

None of that happened all at once.

With time, structure, encouragement, and spiritual care, Willie began participating in the Christian Life Program and taking meaningful steps forward.

Over the past six months, he has been working through the roots of addiction, past pain, and patterns that made life difficult to manage. He has also been developing daily habits that help him remain focused, listen well, receive guidance, and continue growing.

Finding Faith at City Union Mission

Willie’s growing faith has become one of the strongest parts of his recovery journey.

“I came to know Christ here,” Willie said. “If I trust in the Lord, my time here is a lot more beneficial. I learn from past mistakes, and I have someone to lean on in hard times.”

One Bible verse that has encouraged him is Psalm 119:105:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

For Willie, that verse is more than something to memorize. It reminds him that God is guiding him, even when the entire path is not yet clear.

Looking Ahead With Purpose

Today, Willie is looking toward the future with purpose.

He hopes to pursue a career in addiction counseling so he can help others facing similar struggles. For Willie, giving back has become part of his healing.

“I decided I wanted to give back,” he said. “The best thing to do in life is to help others.”

That desire did not come from having everything figured out. It came from knowing what it feels like to need help, receive it, and want someone else to have the same opportunity.

Grateful for the People Who Walked With Him

Gratitude is now an important part of Willie’s life.

He is thankful for the people who have walked alongside him at City Union Mission. Staff members have helped him face past challenges, rebuild trust, focus on his family, and begin restoring relationships.

Their steady encouragement has shown Willie that he does not have to rebuild alone.

To Willie, City Union Mission is more than a place to stay. It is a place where he has found faith, structure, support, and a path forward.

“City Union Mission means the chance to get life together and actually achieve something greater than what we can ever be,” he said.

Willie’s journey is one of many Stories of Hope demonstrating how Christ-centered care and consistent support can help people move toward lasting transformation.
